What is the Equus Club & Winery?

The Equus Club & Winery, Inc. will be a private member-owned 501(c)(7) tax exempt social club that is established for the sole purpose of the members being able to enjoy various social activities from winemaking, taking culinary classes and participating in equestrian activities.

Where is the Equus Club & Winery located?

It will be located in Salem, South Carolina on 335 acres on the shores of Lake Keowee.

Who owns the Equus Club?

The Equus Club & Winery is owned by the members. The membership of the Equus Club will elect a Board of Directors to manage the operations of the club.

What amenities will the Equus Club feature?

Vineyards and a winery to learn the art of winemaking. A Culinary Center for members to take cooking classes and to participate in winemaker dinners featuring specially designed food and wine pairings. An Equestrian Center for members to enjoy riding horses on trail rides through the property or riding under the covered riding arena.

Who can become a member?

Members must be at least 21 years of age. The Equus Club & Winery does not discriminate against applicants for membership on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

How many members will there be?

We will be able to fully fund the development of the Equus Club & Winery once we recruit 500 members. The maximum number of members is 650.

What are the initiation fees to become a member?

$28,500

Can I transfer my membership if I choose to no longer be a member?

Yes. The Boards of Directors will set the terms for a transfer of the membership certificate.

What is the amount of the monthly dues and what do the dues cover?

The initial monthly dues amount will be $495 per month. The concept is to have an “all-inclusive” dues structure that includes ALL amenities – food, wine, cooking classes, equestrian activities, concerts, boating activities, lakeside cottage overnight stay accommodations, etc. Dues and fees are set annually by the Board of Directors, and are payable in advance by the tenth day of each month.

Who manages the Equus Club & Winery?

The Executive Director along with the management team run the day-to-day club and winery operations and strive to enhance the value and benefits associated with Membership. The Board of Directors, composed of elected members, oversee the policies and long-term viability of the Club.

What is the timeline for the project?

We hope to begin accepting applications for membership (application and initiation fee) by December 1, 2015. After signing up the first 500 members the Board of Directors will vote to allocate funds to purchase the 335 acres on Lake Keowee and to begin construction of the project. The project will take approximately 11-12 months to complete so we are projecting an opening date by Christmas of 2016.

When do I start paying my monthly dues?

Monthly dues will NOT be invoiced until the Equus Club & Winery is operational. Therefore, the first monthly dues payment will be approximately December 1, 2016.

May we bring guests to the Club and if so, what is the policy?

The Club’s guest policy states that all guests of a member must be accompanied by such member. Appropriate fees for guests will be established by the Board of Directors.

Will the Club sell the wine it produces to the public or through wine wholesale distributors?

No. All wine produced is for members only.

Can the public visit the winery and taste wine in the tasting room?

No. This is a private social club and is for members’ and their guests’ use only.
